What Are Metafields?
Metafields represent custom data that can be added to various Shopify resources, including products, collections, blogs, and more. They are a powerful tool that extends the functionality of your shop beyond the standard data, enabling more personalized and dynamic content.
How to Create Metafields
Creating metafields is a simple process that consists of two main steps:
Step 1: Access the Metafields Settings
- Log into your Shopify admin.
- Click on "Settings" at the bottom left of the screen.
- In the Settings menu, click on "Custom Data."
Step 2: Create a New Metafield Definition
- On the Custom Data page, select the resource you want to work on (e.g., "products" or "collections").
- Click "add definition" on the right top corner.
- Fill out the fields, including name and description, which are up to you to define. Only you will see the name and description, not your customers.
- Enter the namespace and key as described in the element you're working on (e.g., "uxify.breadcrumb" for a breadcrumb).
- Select the appropriate type, as indicated in the description of the element.
- Select "access for Storefronts" in the "Access" box.
- Save your changes.
How to Use Metafields
Once you have defined a metafield, you can start utilizing it in various ways. Here's how to use a metafield for products:
- Locate the metafields box at the bottom of each product or collection page on your shopify admin.
These collections are now linked to the particular product, giving you the ability to access and interact with them in various ways. For instance, you could link them to breadcrumbs, providing an enhanced navigation experience for users.
